What To Do Next ...

First and foremost SAFETY!

If you are able to transport the animal, take them immediately to the nearest animal shelter. If you are considering keeping the animal in the event that no owner is found, notify the animal control authorities. They are more than happy to know that you are interested.

If the animal in injured - by all means - taken them directly to a veterinary hospital for treatment, however the animal control authorities still need to be notified.

Are you able to house this animal?

Again the authorities have to be advised.

Call or visit local shelters to complete their “found pet” reports.

Check for Signs and Posters

Owners that have lost pets are likely to post signs in the neighborhood. Check for signs at grocery stores, schools, community centers, veterinary offices, traffic intersections, local animal shelters and neighborhood businesses. You could even check at the local police department.

Advertisements.

Please revisit this site under the Lost Pets section and place advertisements in newspapers and radio stations immediately. Don’t forget the classified sections of the local and community newspapers. Ths are often a free service.

Accidents do happen.

Please do not assume that the owner of a found pet has callously abandoned them. Accidents can happen to anyone. A frantic owner is probably looking everywhere right now for their beloved pet.

Positive identification can be sometimes tricky

Positive identification can be sometimes tricky. Keep something back from your advertisement, for example: the animals identification number, tattoo number, placement, somthing that will help you positively identify the pet. Owner’s should have this type of information available and ready for your inspection. Take a picture or scan that information to prove your good intentions should any question arise down the road.

Take your new found friend for a walk.

Those that have lost their pets will be combing their neighborhood. The best times to look for lost pets is in early morning and early to late evening. So if you could be walking them at the same time - a joyous reunion could happen.

Lure them in

Try to lure an animal into your car with food, close the door, and wait for help. Only do this if you are certain someone will come to get the animal very soon. In most cases it is not a good idea to attempt to drive somewhere with a strange dog unrestrained in your car; he may become frantic or aggressive once you’re in the car with him. Cats may do the same, as well as lodge themselves under the car seat, from which extracting them can be dangerous.

Call for backup

If you are not able to safely restrain the animal, call the animal control agency or if necessary the local police departments. In rural areas, often the sheriff department handle these situations. Report the situation as clearly as possible, they will be asking for specific road names, mile markers and landmarks. Leave your phone number with the dispatcher and try to get an estimate of how long it may take someone to respond. Try to stay on the scene to keep an eye on the dog or cat until help arrives.
